About the role
This is a new post within Research England and offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for you as an Executive Officer.
You will provide high quality and effective intelligence, advice and support to the Executive Chair of Research England enabling them to carry out their own role as effectively as possible. In doing so, developing and demonstrating a thorough understanding of research and knowledge exchange in the higher education sector and the political and organisational context within which Research England, UKRI and the Executive Chair operates.
The role will work closely with senior leaders across Research England, as well as many other areas of UK Research and Innovation.
We are seeking an experienced policy professional who can work with considerable drive and autonomy. You will be effective at working across the organisation to improve the outcomes of the work of your colleagues. You will be confident in your dealings with internal and external stakeholders. You will be capable of keeping a very level head in challenging, fast-changing situations and be able to prioritise well to meet deadlines. Research England is a new council within UK Research and Innovation, operating from April 2018. As a key component of the research funding system, Research England will oversee UK Research and Innovation’s England-only functions in relation to university research and knowledge exchange. This includes providing grant funding to English universities for research and knowledge exchange activities; developing and implementing the Research Excellence Framework in partnership with the UK Higher Education funding bodies; overseeing the sustainability of the Higher Education research base in England; overseeing the £900 million UK Research Partnership Investment Fund; and the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF).
Research England will be based in Bristol until at least 2022, co-located with the Office for Students. UK Research and Innovation’s head office is in Swindon with a further administrative office in London. You will be frequently required to attend meetings in London, Swindon and other locations within the UK.
This senior post includes responsibility for responding to critical events and urgent demands as they arise, both inside and outside normal hours taking decisions at short notice with no precedents. The ability to undertake such flexible working is essential.
