The role

Couthie House is located within a residential area of Gilmerton, Edinburgh and has been registered to provide long term care to a maximum of three young people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour who are unable to live with their own families.

As a Casual Residential Worker you will work across our residential services in Gilmerton and Couthie House. The Edinburgh and Lothians Cluster also offers Residential Services and Short Breaks in 4 locations across Edinburgh and the Lothians where there may also be opportunities to gain experience. You will work with the team to develop and deliver young person-centred plans in relation to young peoples needs at all times, using evidenced based practice and direct observation we can support the young people in a way that fits them as an individual.

The role involves offering direct support to young people overnight; supporting personal care, medication, evening routines, implementing sleep plans and behavioural strategies. There will be domestic tasks to complete as the service is the young person's home and we take great pride in how it looks.

We work directly with children and young people with complex learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. We work in partnership with CAMHS LD and our own Behaviour Consultant to develop and deliver person centres support plans that offer consistency and clear outcomes for all out young people. The opportunity to implement agreed behaviour support interventions and play an integral part in the development of the young people we support.

We firmly believe that behaviour is communication and work to identify what the young people are trying to tell us through their behaviour and support them to communicate that in a positive way. We utilise various alternative communication strategies and can offer full training and support with these.

This role will be working on an ad hoc basis as and when required.

We are open to discussions about shift flexibility, if required, at interview stage.

  • Have good communication skills and the ability to engage well with both young people, colleagues and other professionals.
  • Be creative thinker and having a solution focused approach.
  • Use your skills, knowledge and experience to meet the needs of young people.

You will need:

  • A commitment to working on shift rota pattern, which includes midweek, weekends and bank holidays.
  • A positive approach, providing a fun environment for all the children in our care.
  • Ideally, a HNC and SVQ 3 in a social care discipline (or a qualification which would meet the registration requirements) or a commitment to working towards these.
  • Experience of working with children and young people with disabilities,
  • Experience of Social Care or support young people or adults in a formal setting.
  • Safeguarding knowledge.
  • Experience of British Sign Language would be an advantage but is not essential.
