THE ROLE: Responsible to the Switch Team Manager for the provision of revenue protection and customer care duties on train.

Key Accountabilities:

Examine and issue tickets as appropriate with focus on the migration from paper to smart ticketing.

Deal with travel irregularities, issue excess fares and Unpaid Fares Notices.

Assist and work as directed by Supervisory/Management staff in the performance of revenue protection duties.

Regularly patrol the train/station to deal with overcrowding, unauthorised superior class travel, and unruly behaviour as far as is reasonably practicable, calling police assistance when required.

Assist customers joining and alighting trains or entering or exiting stations, particularly disabled and mobility restricted customers, elderly and those with luggage or children, including use of portable ramps which weigh up to 15kg.

Proactively provide customer information, and answer customer enquiries as appropriate.

Take reactive responses to assist customers during times of disruption, overcrowding etc.Including use of pagers and mobile phones, when required.

Ensure high standard of on train/station environment throughout and take remedial actions to rectify shortcomings, including intermediate and turnaround cleans at agreed locations.

Check equipment, cleanliness and general environment of stations/trains, with particular emphasis on lighting, heating, doors and public address systems, reporting defects where appropriate.

Carry out station or station barrier duties as necessary, including en-training or de-training checks.

Fulfil marketing requirements on train and at stations e.g. distribution of leaflets, surveys, train count information.

Check trains at terminating stations to ensure no passengers, or property, have been left behind.

Undertake customer counts as required.

Carry out other duties and responsibilities as required within the agreements

Assist and support unpaid fare strategy with barriers and ticket checks.

Assist BPT and Revenue Protection Officers during prevention of antisocial behaviour exercises.

THE PERSON: Enthusiastic and customer orientated. Ability to take responsibility and make decisions within a sphere of authority. Able to remain calm in difficult and challenging situations.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Knowledge of customer service requirements. Effective inter-personal skills with customers and staff. Good communication, organisational and planning skills essential. Effective team working skills.

OTHER INFORMATION: This post works a 35 hour week with varying shift patterns and weekend working involved.

Your trainingwhich includes induction, customer service, commercial skills, first aid, fire safety, disability awareness and conflict managementwill be professionally delivered to give you all the tools to need to master this surprisingly varied and interesting job.

Reference Salary after training is £25,440 per annum plus 3% commission on ticket sales. While training it's the equivalent of £17,444 per annum. Contributory final salary pension scheme is available and a further benefit is free and reduced rate rail travel for you and your family, where applicable.

Selection process: Selected candidates will be short-listed and invited to complete on-line assessments. If successful the next stage would be an interview with a local manager. The final stage for successful candidates will be a medical questionnaire. Appointees must submit at least two satisfactory references, Disclosure Scotland clearance and complete a six month probation period.
